<image:title>Inspiration - Kate Usher - So, there you have it! Menopausal women rarely get mentioned. Yet, pesky pubescent girls are accepted as normal - a fact of life. Why the difference? It’s an age thing! The older the woman the less she’s valued. And whilst we may roll our eyes at the menopausal male, the menopausal woman has been condemned to off-limits status. But here’s the good news! Change is afoot. High profile women have been sharing their experiences - until a certain virus brought things to a screeching halt. And there’s a ‘Menopause - the Musical’ too. So, it’s merely a matter of time before the unmentionable becomes mentionable and hits the mainstream. But what about my Page 1 Woman? She’s Kate Usher, menopause coach and expert and author of Your Second Phase. A smart, bold, proactive, out-spoken, activist and leader. She’s changing the negative narrative, empowering women to manage the challenges at work and home, whilst enabling them to see menopause for what it is – life’s second phase. Exciting! “We need to recognise that menopause isn’t the end. It’s a beginning”. Read on to learn about Kate’s journey towards taking control of the menopause.</image:title>

<image:title>Inspiration - Catherine Hinwood - Here’s the narrative; you’re training for your dream career and there’s a placement you desperately want - but they can’t pay you. Would you do it anyway? Not many people would, I reckon. But if you’ve a raging fire in your belly and you’re driven by passion and purpose, wouldn’t you do anything to get your foot in the door? So, it was for my Page 1 Woman. Whilst still at primary school, she’d got woke about inequality – gender and racial. And it wasn’t because she was black – she’s not. It seems she had a natural ability to be empathetic, and get the perspective of victims of discrimination. She resolved to have a career in bringing about change. “In primary school I was conscious of the way indigenous students were treated which I found inexplicable. And in high school I was interested in legal stuff such as issues around institutional racism. At university my submission was on indigenous women in prison”. Meet Catherine Hinwood – passionate, smart, bold, fiercely authentic. A gutsy tenacious woman, who’s undeterred by set-backs; the ‘gender equality champion’ in her workplace. Having spotted her insightful posts on Facebook, her fearless stance on social justice, I had to contact her. We share values and interests after all. Catherine didn’t disappoint. This Page 1 Woman exemplifies the power of career planning, execution and overcoming obstructions. When the odds were stacked against her, she drew on her women role models plus the belief instilled by her parents that as a girl she could do whatever she wanted. Keep reading; Catherine Hinwood won’t disappoint you either.</image:title>

<image:caption>Risks! Love them or fear them, rarely, it seems, are we indifferent. The prevailing belief that risk taking is a masculine trait and women are risk averse has been slammed by scientific evidence. But the myth lingers. Well, here’s a woman who’s more than comfortable taking risks. Let down shamefully by her employer, she suddenly quit her high status, high salaried job, took a massive pay cut and started a new career – from the bottom. Several years later, when she disliked the way her employing organisation was unraveling, she jumped from her highly paid job into self-employment – little security, no regular income.</image:caption>

And suddenly, you’re diagnosed with a disabling degenerative illness that changes your life forever. What would you do? Such was the narrative of my Page 1 Woman. From being an active, go-getter, her whole life was flipped on its head as she spent 6 years resisting and then adjusting to a radically new identity. “I craved for my old identity. And for a while this craving helped me get through the treatment process, but it also hindered me. The hospital kept telling me ‘You've got to give up on that life. You can't jet around the world anymore’. But I didn't want to hear these things.” Meet Hiroo Chothia a determined, talented, smart woman with tenacity in abundance. She had to find a way to adapt to the limitations of her new life and become comfortable again in her own skin. She had to learn to be open and vulnerable, continue to do business with adjustments, and make a real difference in that world as an effective leader. But how did she do it? <image:title>Inspiration - Sophie Breslin - Meet Sophie Breslin</image:title>
<image:caption>Back in the day, when it came to choosing a career, school girls were often steered away from ‘boys’ subjects’ such as math and physics, towards ‘girls’ subjects’ such as nursing and teaching. But what if these girls didn’t naturally follow the norm? What then? My Page 1 Woman was one of these girls - labelled ‘naughty’ because she refused to stay in the box in which adults tried to place her. She ‘coloured outside the lines rather than within them’. But at school her natural abilities weren’t encouraged and through boredom she became an incorrigible prankster, who was eventually ‘asked to leave’. But this became the making of her because it ushered in a series of events that led to her doing what came instinctively; ‘boys subjects’ and a career in mechanical engineering. She is Sophie Breslin, a smart, forthright, gutsy, divergent-thinking problem-solver. Having found her niche in a male dominated industry, she made a great success of it, despite the demands of having to constantly prove her capability. A woman who’s always up for a challenge, she’s been a sky-diver, trained for a marathon in 5 months to fund-raise for charities working in developing countries, and has contributed her time and skills to creating sustainable projects in Africa. Read on and find out more about Sophie, who colours outside the lines.</image:caption>

However, she walked away from this challenging experience, scared but with her head held high. And with some coaching from me, in the first few months, she drew on her inner resources and set up another business in Goa in 2016. Meet Sapna Shahani, bold, determined, resilient and tenacious, she’s now the director of ‘Blurb’ a social media marketing business that has cornered the Goan hospitality market. And all that in just 3 years! But how did she do it? How did she navigate the challenges that afflict single women in a country with entrenched traditions – many of which work against women? Which would you choose? For many of us, this might be a no-brainer – go for the marriage, right? But for some, giving up your dream would be so devastating that walking away from your marriage would be the only option. So guess what my Page 1 Woman did? She ditched her marriage. Crazy? Not when you see the absurdity of the choice and dream of being an influential entrepreneur. Meet my charismatic, tenacious and relentless risk taking Page 1 Woman, Bilyana Georgieva; a Bulgarian polyglot and known to her family, jokingly, as the ‘Black Sheep of Bulgaria’. A multi-award winning international speaker, Tedx speaker and international transformation expert, she has led transformation programmes for many well known global companies (e.g. River Island, Bank of Montreal, DHL). She's now driven to transform the business decision-making paradigm, through teaching an effective blended spirituality. Keep reading and learn more about Bilyana’s work.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Girls who leave school knowing they want a ‘different’ occupation are probably a rare breed. And increasingly these days, they’re opting for careers in male dominated fields. Different, indeed! Gone are the days when careers were strictly divided along gender lines that we were expected to follow, even if we didn’t want to. It was a courageous girl who stuck her neck out and defied those expectations. My Page 1 Woman was one of these bold teenagers. She knew early on that she was unusual and couldn’t follow the norm. Her work experiences in an engineering department at the age of 14 and then at 16, opened doors into an apprenticeship in the electrical engineering field. ‘I'm a person with strong opinions about what I'm going to do in life and what I don't want to do, and I follow my instinct’, she said. Meet Jo Corbishley, a smart and incredibly successful Geordie, who made a meteoric rise up the career ladder in a male dominated industry. At 30 years old, she led a team of consultants helping to develop a system for engines in the USA. But what was it that fuelled her success at such a pace? What did she have that many of us find later in our careers? Read on and discover Jo’s secret.</image:caption>

Perhaps you’re less judgemental and wonder about the circumstances behind the screams? We’d all like to be in that last category, wouldn’t we? But that’s not the experience of my Page 1 Woman. Whenever her autistic son became distressed in public, she found the level of intolerance quite shocking. As an invisible disability, unseen is unrecognised, right, especially when your child seems a picture of good health. But why was she shocked? She’d been intolerant too, before becoming a mum, she now admits. And gradually she learned tolerance and an appreciation of difference – ‘gifts’ from her son. “The environment I worked in made me oblivious to many things that I'm now aware of. Now when I see parents struggling with young children I don't automatically think that child is a spoiled brat”.</image:caption>

My Page 1 Woman styles herself as a ‘smile strategist.’ She’s all about creating effective relationships with yourself and others through the benefits that come with smiling. Meet Ruqya Khan, a wordsmith. A bold action taker accustomed to seizing opportunities before she has felt ready. Risky, you might think. But it has paid off as it brought her out of her domestic rut and into a portfolio career. Of course it wasn’t easy. She’d been socialised in line with her culture to be submissive, so learning to cut through the conditioning and put herself first was challenging. However, amongst the rewards came her SMILE Strategy and she’s now on a mission to spread it widely. Read on and find out more about Ruqya and her smile strategy.</image:caption>

She now runs a business as a professional artist alongside two other businesses. And if that’s not enough, she’s a Tropic Independent Ambassador and a mother of two young sons to boot. She’s Paola Minekov, creative, courageous, energetic artist and entrepreneur. A social animal, who believes in the power of connections, she has used networking to immerse herself in local life wherever that happens to be. This Page 1 Woman runs a social media and web design business with clients worldwide, and a networking group side hustle. She’s active, focused, determined and incredibly productive. She’s a role model for women (and men), of how to plan, organise and develop a business over a short period of time and manage a fairly large family simultaneously. Meet Anita Wong, a former ICU nurse, who transitioned into a stay at home mum, and later reinvented herself by returning to college to sit in a class with youngsters and learn new skills. Although, it’s difficult to generalise, cults are often identified as communities that place rigorous restrictions on their members, demand separation from mainstream society and hold dogmatic and unconventional beliefs. If you value freedom and autonomy, beware cults. But, here’s someone who was a cult member for several years. And she’s my Page 1 Woman. Meet Michelle Coops – inspirational, charismatic and dynamic, a multi-award winning international public speaker and courageous go-getter. On recognising that her values contradicted those of the cult, she rebelled and was shunned by cult members and banished from home. She was only sixteen. This is the stuff of nightmares for many public speakers and possibly a calamity from which some might never recover. But my Page 1 Woman has turned stage tripping into an art-form, and her audiences love it. It takes a special kind of woman to pull this off, right? Meet Deenita Pattni, international speaker, public speaker coach, mentor, award winning trainer and award winning International bestselling author. She’s Andy Harrington’s former operations manager and leader of his public speaking Ace Mentors. Jetting off to the Middle East, Far East and Australia to lead Andy’s team or co-deliver his Professional Speakers Academy are commitments she fulfills alongside running her own business. Thankfully they don’t all collapse at work or breakdown psychologically and take years to recover. Such was the experience of my Page 1 Woman. Reaching executive director at Goldman Sachs, aged 32, with an incredibly high salary and matching lifestyle, she rode the crest of a wave, feeling invincible. “I was uber productive. I worked all hours. And the waves parted for me to walk through. It was intoxicating”. <image:caption>When you’re a teenager from an unstable, oppressive background, in which mental health features, what do you do? And what if this background causes you to drift into an abusive relationship with an older man? And the days become years and you find yourself imprisoned with two children in a cycle of violence, emotional abuse and coercive control, desperate to escape but hunted down each time you do. This was the plight of my Page 1 Woman. ‘When people say they don't understand how people get caught in domestic abuse, come and speak to me’. What we know about domestic abuse is that leaving is far from simple. The abuser chips away at your self-esteem and sense of self leaving you feeling worthless. And often it takes years and a great deal of support to take a series of forward and backward steps to make that final decision to leave. Meet Anneth Bryan, (Netty), a courageous, determined and resilient domestic abuse survivor and an extraordinary Page 1 Woman. Life has a way of turning the greatest mishaps into the most unexpected opportunities. When Netty finally cultivated her personal power and started standing up for herself, the abuse abruptly ended – in a way she didn’t foresee.</image:caption>

<image:caption>If you came from a dysfunctional family that emotionally and sexually abused your child, what would you do? My Page 1 Woman has led an unusual life of setbacks – child sexual abuse and abduction, stalking/harassment, eating disorders, murder – I could go on. And she’s experienced victories too- for example inventing an award winning multi-combination safety ladder. When the system failed her young daughter, she immersed herself in the world of mental health and psychology. Equipping herself to handle the impact of sexual abuse, she enabled her daughter to heal. This was her ‘unpaid occupation’, which she ran alongside her paid occupation as a business woman. This approach to setbacks has helped her to succeed.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Imagine HR professionals; what images spring to mind? Traditionally HR professionals are seen as the organisation’s scary police or its agony aunts– neither of which are favourable. My Page 1 Woman, Su Patel, is an HR consultant on a mission to transform the face of HR. "I want to help HR professionals understand that we need to be a brand that enables businesses and their people to grow, rather than a brand that’s restrictive and unclear about its role". Designing her "HR Brand Blueprint" was her first step towards achieving her mission. Not bad for the former Tesco’s checkout girl, who became a manager at aged 18. So, who is Su Patel? She’s smart, capable, with a clear vision and a clear head; a risk taker who leads by building leaders. Given her deprived background, and a childhood characterised by bullying, isolation, poor self-esteem and divorced parents (at a time when divorce was taboo in the Indian community), the question is, how did she get from the tills to creating an HR department? She may have had no HR training, but she had a shed load of wisdom that enabled that well-known super-market to develop engaged staff and a thriving business. Financing herself through her HR courses, and acquiring 3 properties before the age of 30, suggests a woman determined to succeed. Read on and learn more about the extraordinary Su Patel.</image:caption>

<image:title>Inspiration - Dr Jacqueline Campbell - About Dr Jacqueline Campbell</image:title>
<image:caption>Did you know that suicide is the biggest killer of young people in the UK? When 10% of school children have a diagnosable mental illness, you’d be forgiven for believing that appropriate intervention would be obtainable at a sufficiently early age. However, 70% of children and young people experiencing mental health problems don’t get this. Shocking? Of course. My Page 1 Woman is determined to turn this around. She’s Dr Jacqueline Campbell, (aka Jax), who was knocked off course when her younger brother took his own life. And setting up the Julian Campbell Foundation with a vision to enable children and young people to manage their mental health, is her way of ensuring that her brother didn’t die in vain. ‘They’re under-represented in terms of support provision. Statistics show that 50% of mental health conditions (e.g. bulimia, depression or anxiety), are experienced by age 14. And it takes 10 years on average before they get support. Many young people fall through the net. And then they become adults and for example, they lose a loved one and they’re sectioned. We want to prepare them to manage these events and their mental health’.</image:caption>

<image:caption>If your friends were denouncing a charity appeal as a scam, would you make a donation? My Page 1 Woman, moved by the plight of a group of Ugandan children, silenced the cynics’ voices, did her homework and made a generous donation to the ‘Divine Care Missions’. Since then, she’s raised funds for it, written three books about it and is negotiating to turn the story into film. Meet my Page 1 Woman, Linda Wilson, former clinical and forensic psychologist who might have lost out on career success had her potential gone unspotted. ‘A week before the university term I was working in a factory counting screws into bags, when the women in the office called me to meet Counsellor Stella Gundy. She said, "You should be going to uni." I replied, "I'm not good enough." She said, "Nonsense! Find a course and I'll sort the finance." I ended up at Lanchester Polytechnic doing a BA in Applied Social Sciences’.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Inspiration - Angelika Breukers - About Angelika Breukers</image:title>
<image:caption>When you hear of women involved in the escort business do you ever wonder what got them there? Although, escorts are generally seen as middle class, high end sex workers, many are lured into the profession by the opportunity to make big bucks quickly in a job that’s ‘just like any other’. Others get involved through coercion and trafficking rather than by choice. My Page 1 Woman, a former escort, got into it through a mix of conditioning and choice. “When I was around nine my father told me that when I grew up I’d be a prostitute making him a lot of money. I believed him when he said Father Christmas existed, so I must have believed the prostitute prediction subconsciously.” Some people say, “You are what you believe”. Now add in layers of trauma – domestic violence, sexual abuse and conditioned secrecy - and the prediction becomes self-fulfilling. So, meet Angelika Breukers, a woman intent on ‘platforming’ her story to enable trauma victims and people that are stuck with negative beliefs about themselves to change those beliefs and get liberated. Against a backdrop of stereotypes and stigma, it takes great courage to launch a business based on this. But that’s exactly what Angelika has done. Read on and learn more about her mission.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Did you know that Britain has the lowest percentage of women engineers in Europe? At just 6%, this hasn’t increased since 1919. When the modern reality of engineering isn’t promoted, and it’s perceived as a man’s profession involving grease and grubby overalls, it’s hardly surprising that women rarely consider it a career option. My multiple award-winning Page 1 Woman™ is one of a rare breed of women in structural engineering. Meet Najwa Jawahar, wise beyond her years, energetic, bold, assertive, ambitious, and enthusiastic. She’s on a mission to mentor and inspire young people to enter and thrive in the structural engineering profession. Obtaining her first award whilst an undergraduate, in an IStrucTE’s international design competition, three additional prestigious awards have followed. But that’s not all; she’s created a global network of 300 engineering graduates and apprentices which has established her as a ‘one to watch’. Doors to developmental opportunities and to making a bigger difference widely have opened. ‘I’ve now started to design and deliver my own projects, and I'm stepping into public speaking too’. And she’s still only 30.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Have you ever stood on the platform of a London Victoria line tube station and wondered who was staring at you from the darkness of the driver’s cabin? Chances are you would have imagined a bloke. Stereotypically, train driving is viewed as a man’s profession. Right? But, you may have been wrong. Apparently, around 100 or so women drive tube trains. And my Page 1 Woman is one of them. Involving 15 weeks of gruelling training and exams, it’s definitely not a career anyone can walk into. And that’s just as well, because we need well trained, skilled drivers to tackle the challenges that the hectic underground throws up every day. “I really feel good because it's not an easy job to get. It’s more than just pushing buttons. You have to learn so much about the train, and how the system works.”</image:caption>
